THATCHWORKS

British Telephone Kiosks

“Silence Cabinets” is the technical name for these indoor booths which were (and may still be) found in such places as station concourses, London Underground station booking halls and indoor markets.

They could be just a single booth or an inter-linked row of any number.

The K1 was the earliest design of the GPO telephone kiosk which appeared in the early 1920’s but examples remained in use until after WW2 and into the 1950’s, particularly in rural areas.

The initial design was subject to improvements and we have chosen patterns 234 and (the more elaborate) 236 as subjects for our models.
