Nissen Hut
An iconic British invention which dates back to the era of the Great War (1914-18). The British army needed prefabricated, easily transportable, buildings and Major Nissen, of the Royal Engineers, designed the hut which bears his name.
The design was subsequently adopted by the US Army where it was known as the “Quonset”.
Built in their thousands both during and after both World Wars, they survive in large numbers, adapted for all sorts of uses. Garages, scout huts, farm and airfield buildings are just a few examples.
